the city is now under a curfew. egyptian security forces are battle supporters of morsi. the violence erupted when security forces raided two camps filled with morsi supporters. at least 149 people have been killed there and more than 1400 wounded. the muslim brotherhood giving much higher numbers than that be p the white house has condemned the violence. we'll have much more on this escalating situation at the bottom of the hour from some of our reporters there monitoring the situation. closer to home in alabama this morning, about 6:00 a.m. a large cargo jet slammed into the ground. this is half a mile short of the runway. the plane owned by u.p.s. is an air bus built to haul cargo. the pilot and the co-pilot are both dead.

david matingly is in birming ha at the scene of the crash. >> reporter: it's quite a mystery. investigators are on the ground. looking at the wreckaging the forward part of the plane seems to be intact. that suggests these flight recorders should be in working order and should be retrieved fairly easily. we're waiting to hear from those investigators about what they are about to get quickly at the scene. a lot of speculation from local officials here. there was some weather in the area. nothing severe. nothing that would ever be thought of to be able to bring down an aircraft. people here also say that they heard the plane go over and some strange noises from the engine. i spoke to one man who is a

member of the civil air patrol, a former airline mechanic. he thought he heard a backfire from one of the engines. >> very fast and i went to windows on the backside where i hear this aircraft and look in the sky. i saw the flash. i mouse moved. he heard was sounded like a backfire following by a rush of engine noise suggesting the pilot play have been trying to give the engines as much gas as possible trying to gain some altitude before the crash. adding to this mystery i spoke to the mayor of birmingham who says the pilot made so energy call to the tower here.

they do tend to get along. why? they don't agree philosophically but newark is the state's biggest city. the governor at times needs to work with the mayor on education and other issues. in washington he's representing new jersey and wants transportation money. if he were here after soup r storm sandy he would be working close with the governor. it doesn't mean that don't have differences. i wouldn't call them best buddies but they have a civil friendship. >> they thought he moved it early to october they thought he did it so he wouldn't have to run against booker.

>> reporter: the streets are quieter and it seems quieter than they were earlier in the day. the riot police went in clearing those various sit in sites. they managed to clear the smaller one fairly quickly. we did witness clashes breaking out in the various side streets. the egyptian authorities announcing they had just cleared. not only were they dealing with trying to clear it, they were also dealing with pro-morsi demonstrators that were trying to breakthrough by a line of army soldiers trying to reach the sit in sites. the pro-morsi demonstrators have

county schools will charge for extracurricular activities. one student will have to pay $150, $50 per sport. a lot of parents not too happy about this. can public schools really charge students to play sports like this? >> they can and they have. there's a recent article in forbes that highlights how many schools are doing this. not only that they talk about how it started as a temporary stopgap to help schools pay for things because that you are budgets were so strapped. i think there are two things we need to point out. in this hartford case, parents are so upset about this because they didn't find out until two weeks before school.

it's you didn't give us any time to pry to prepare for it. we've seen pay to play in sports for many years now. what we haven't seen and i think is kind of new is this also applies to all extracurricular activities. $50 for sports and $25 if your kid wants o be in the spanish club or math club or theater. you have multiple kids doing multiple things. there was one family in ohio that said they wracked up $4400 in a public school system last year. >> a lot of parents are saying the schools are passing the burden onto them. what about student who is can't afford to pay this? do you think they will be left out now? >> i have not heard of any program that is going to try to supplement funds for them. looks like at this point families are left to their on accord to figure out how to make sure their kids can participate in all the activities they want

we first brought you the story of a 15-year-old teen in georgia who desperately needs a heart transplant. his parents say that the hospital refused to put him on the list, because doctors saw him as a troubled teen who would not do what he needed to do to receive the transplant, but now we have a e report that the hospital has reconsidered. >> reporter: anthony stokes will die if he does not get a new heart in six months, but last month the hospital said they would not give him one. >> they gave him a death sentence. >> reporter: according to this statement, the doctors said that anthony is not a current transplant candidate because of a history of noncompliance. >> they said that they have no evidence that he would take his medicine and he would not have follow-up care. >> reporter: but a family spokesman said that anthony's illness was sudden and never been sick before and how could he have been compliant with the

doctor's orders? and they believe he wasn't needed a heart because of low grades and in juvenile detention because of a fight defending his b brother. news of the rejection received national attention. >> surely life and death like it is for a 15-year-old anthony -- >> reporter: and by late monday a dramatic change of heart. the family spokesman telling cnn that the hospital did a complete 180 and reversed the decision, and anthony is now on the transplant list and awaiting a new heart. the hospital did not confirm it, but released a statement tuesday saying that the heart transplant evaluation is ongoing and for the patient and his or her family's ability to meet the specific transplant criteria. and they cannot discuss this case or any other case because of privacy rules. but the hospital physician said that they are working with the family to determine the care

plan and the next best steps for patient. the family believes that the hospital changed the mind because of media pressure and what it called the handiwork of god. >> elizabeth cohen joins me with more on this story. hi, elizabeth. >> hi. >> and the hospital will not speak about originally why anthony stokes was originally denied, but why are hearts denied to teenagers who desperately need them like anthony? >> well, pam, the problem is there are not enough hearts to go around and the doctors say a precious resource and they want to give them to people who will help them in the long term as possible. if you get a heart and you don't go to doctor's follow-up appoints or medications, you can die within weeks. getting a new heart can kill you if they don't take care of the heart, so they want the hearts to go to the people who will take care of them. here is the catch. it is subjective and the doctors can look at someone and say, we

he needs a new heart and she was told, no, we are not going to do it, your son has autism and he can't take care of himself and she said i take care of him, and they said, no, you will die before he does and she said i'm 47, and it went back and forth, they won't give him a heart, because the team has judged that the young boy, this young man won't take care of it. it is extremely subjective. >> and anthony's family said they were being judged based on the race, and the class and the socioeconomic factors and do you believe it could play a role in this? >> it is -- and you would never want to say that someone is racist or judging somebody based on the socioeconomic facers to, but what is interesting is that the studies show that people who are wealthier and better educated do better with new hearts. they have better outcomes than people who are poorer, but of course, that does not mean that you would say no to a poor person, but that data is out there, and that is what is out there. so i think that some doctors are thinking, what do we do here?
